Role-playing games are an excellent STEM programming solution. During each session the Game Master will present a problem for the players to overcome. In order to do this, players will need to gather and evaluate information by interacting with each other and the characters portrayed by the Game Master. As the game continues, conflicts will arise forcing the participants to make decisions as a team and as individuals utilizing knowledge, critical thinking, and social skills to find a solution and move the game forward.
The problems presented by the Game Master represent scenarios based on a strict rule set by which the world of the game operates. While the setting of the game may be in a world of Dragons or Aliens, players will still be tested in basic math, sciences, and social interactions. Common obstacles during play may include negotiating peace between factions of differing ideals, traversing difficult terrain, and managing finite resources in order to survive.
